What is think and grow rich about in chapter 2?
It’s about desire.
Desire being the starting point of all achievement, the first step towards riches and success.
If I understand it correctly, then desire is a state of mind. It’s a mindset or a mental attitude.
Desire is described as being a strong feeling of want… a sense of longing, hoping, or a craving. When there is a desire, the sense of longing, hoping or craving is excited by the feeling or enjoyment of such desire.
Napoleon describes the desire we should have as being intense, pulsating, a burning desire, to the point of being a consuming obsession.
Desire is being determined to have… whatever it may be. To go after it as if your life depends on it.
You must want whatever it is you want as bad as you want to breathe, if you want to be successful as bad as you want to breathe then you will succeed.
Have you ever experienced not being able to breathe? Even for a few seconds? That overwhelming feeling of the need to breathe… that is what he explains the desire one should have for what one wants.
Your desire should be an intense burning desire that drives you, that pushes you beyond your boundaries.
One should have definiteness of purpose, the knowledge of what one wants, a burning desire to have it. Never recede from your desire.
Napoleon explains what it is to have a burning desire to be and to do. He describes six steps one must take to achieve this intense, pulsating, burning desire.
One of these steps I especially like as it makes you face yourself, talk to yourself in the mirror. It makes a difference when you hear yourself, and when you look yourself in the eye and tell yourself how it is and how it will be.
I look at myself, I look myself straight in the eye. I speak to myself with strong confidence. I am not asking, I am not ambiguous, I am saying.
He explains the point he makes by way of stories of various people who had a burning desire and achieved their goals against great odds.
The best one for me is the one about his son, Blair, that was born without ears, and how this was Blair’s greatest asset in life after they mixed faith with a burning desire, along with the other principles the entire book is about.
They communicated the desire in every way possible with persistence and determination. A great belief was added in the equation and success was achieved.
Faith, hope, courage, persistence and determination together with a burning desire is a sure recipe for success.
No one is ever defeated until defeat is accepted as a reality. Success is a matter of laws, not luck. Success is something you do intentionally and deliberate, it does not happen by chance. Success is a choice, and a lifestyle.
In this post and the previous one, (you can read What is Think and Grow Rich about Chapter 1 here), I only touch the tip of the iceberg, there are so much more which I will not go into detail about what Napoleon Hill discusses in the book Think and Grow Rich.
I strongly recommend you get the book and read it completely, then read it again and, whatever, read it a third time too. You will be utterly grateful that you do. Get your copy of Napoleon Hill’s Think and Grow Rich right here.
